Toe to toe: MPOA vs. IPNNI

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA) and integrated private-network-to-network interface (IPPNI) are products of ATM forum's PNNI technical working group. MPOA defines the client-server interface between ATM end-stations or edge devices and route servers. It doesn't explain how route servers share information and it can't distribute information about the locations of other route servers. IPNNI, by contrast, communicates between route servers and switches. While it is capable of supporting thousands of route servers, it can't and was never intended to scale down. MPOA supporters, therefore, require the IPNNI specification so that their gear can transmit among multiple route servers and IPNNI proponents need MPOA to let their devices support ATM-attached hosts.
