Abstract

In the nineteenth century, Italy was the theater of one of the rst criminal cases in Europe, solved in part with the use of entomological evidence; in 1874, in the city of Padua, the remains of a mummied corpse were found in an attic. Because of the advanced state of decomposition, the entomologist, Lazzaretti, helped to calculate the time of death using the puparia that were recovered on the scene (Porta 1929).
