Abstract

In this introductory chapter, we outline our understanding of critical perspectives and how they apply to the nonprofit organizing and voluntary action studies context, including providing an organizing framework around critical theory 'domains' and introducing the chapters in this volume. We introduce critical theory as a multidimensional concept that takes on different connotations and uses, noting critical researchers aim to generate insights that challenge assumptions and oppressive institutions, ultimately changing our basic understanding of phenomena; thereby contributing in specific ways to knowledge production in the field as well as hopefully leading to changes to address such oppressions. The chapter includes a scan of the literature identifying contemporary work being done in key critical theory 'domains' including postcolonial theories and epistemologies of the South, critical race theories, critical feminist theories, queer theory, critical disability theory, poststructural theories, and critical management studies. We end the chapter with an overview of the Handbook.
