Abstract

Current designs of AI-infused systems do not cater to the steps required for learning to occur. Due to their conversational interaction type, students readily use them for learning activities, and they have increased confidence after use, but this does not translate to performance. We created an LLM-powered system called Study Assist with self-regulated learning principles by including features for forethought, planning, goal setting, and self-reflection. We evaluated this system with 55 participants recruited from Prolific. Even though the process was cognitively demanding, we recorded high usability scores.
