N2 - Digital mental health tools have expanded quickly, but many still struggle to understand the way people talk about their emotions online. Clinical vocabularies like SNOMED CT, ICD-10, DSM-5, and the Mental Functioning Ontology were created for medical settings, so they often miss the casual phrases and slang people use in platforms such as Reddit. Someone might say “I feel burnt out,” “I’m mentally cooked,” or “I disappeared for a week,” and these expressions rarely match any formal clinical term even though they describe real emotional experiences. In this work, we outline a practical approach for building a hybrid interface ontology using social-media data and graph clustering. The goal is to connect everyday mental-health expressions to more structured psychological concepts without losing the original meaning. The resulting Mental Health Interface Ontology (MHIO) serves as a bridge between clinical diagnostic codes and colloquial expressions. The first version of MHIO, derived from Reddit, includes 369 concepts, 1095 axioms, 24 object properties, and 17 data properties.
