Abstract

Engineers are developing a breed of factory workers willing to put in long hours for no pay. It is a kind of software, based on artificial intelligence (AI) research, that can move itself from place to place to help people work effectively. Known as agents, these artificial assistants are software components that live inside computer environments. Agents are made in a variety of forms to perform all sorts of useful work. At first, agents are constrained to a single computer or to a single computing environment and the tasks they do are pre-established. Agents are breaking this bond that confines them to a single environment while learning ways of accomplishing tasks on their own, based on their experience, in order to move from place to place.
